Polyester vs Cotton: An Honest Comparison

Most "polyester vs cotton" comparisons are written by someone trying to sell you one of them. This one isn't. Polyester does real things well, cotton does other things well, and the honest answer depends on what you're actually buying the garment to do.

What polyester actually does well

Start with the part the cotton crowd tends to skip: polyester is good at a lot of things. It's a plastic fiber spun from petroleum, and that origin buys you genuine, measurable advantages. It's strong. It resists abrasion. It doesn't wrinkle much, so it travels well and skips the iron. It dries fast because the fiber itself barely absorbs water — moisture sits on the surface and evaporates instead of soaking in. And it's cheap to produce at scale, which is most of why it now dominates global fiber production.

If your priority is a jacket shell that shrugs off a downpour, a backpack strap that won't fray, or a uniform that survives a hundred hot washes looking the same, polyester is a reasonable, often correct choice. We don't list it — that's the whole premise of the site — but we're not going to pretend it has no merits. It has plenty. The question is what those merits cost you, and that's where the marketing copy goes quiet.

The honest costs nobody prints on the tag

The first cost is how it feels and breathes. Because polyester doesn't absorb water, it also doesn't move much air or sweat away from your skin in still conditions — it traps a film of humid warmth against you. In a cool gym with a fan, "wicking" works. On a humid commute, the same fiber feels clammy. Cotton breathes more freely and absorbs sweat instead of pooling it, which is why a cotton tee feels cooler standing around even though it dries slower once it's soaked.

The second cost is odor. Polyester holds onto smell in a way cotton doesn't. The bacteria responsible for body odor cling to the oil-loving plastic surface and survive ordinary washing better than they survive on cotton fibers. Anyone who's owned a synthetic running shirt that smells the moment it warms up has met this firsthand. It's not your imagination, and it doesn't fully wash out.

The third cost is shedding. Synthetic textiles release tiny plastic fibers — microplastics — into the wash water and the air, and this is documented and studied rather than disputed. We won't put a number on it, because the honest numbers vary wildly by garment, fabric, and machine, and inventing one would defeat the point of this site. But "polyester sheds plastic" is an established finding, not a scare tactic. Cotton sheds too; it just sheds cellulose, which the environment already knows how to break down.

The fourth cost is subtler and rarely mentioned: longevity of appeal. Polyester is durable in the sense that it won't tear. But it pills, it picks up an unremovable greasy sheen over time, and it ages in a way that reads as "old and cheap" rather than "worn in." A polyester shirt often outlives the point at which you want to wear it. Cotton frequently does the opposite — it softens, fades a little, and earns a place in the rotation. Durability and desirability aren't the same thing, and tags only ever brag about the first one.

"Moisture-wicking," decoded

"Moisture-wicking" is the most oversold phrase in the category, so it's worth saying plainly what it means. It does not mean the fabric absorbs your sweat — polyester barely absorbs anything. It means the fabric is engineered, through fiber shape and knit structure, to pull liquid water across its surface and spread it thin so it evaporates faster. That's a real, useful property for intense exercise where you're generating sweat faster than cotton can dry.

But "wicking" only helps when there's airflow and a humidity gradient to evaporate into. It does nothing for the trapped, clammy feeling in a hot, still room, and it's the same mechanism that lets the fabric hold odor. So when a hangtag promises "advanced moisture management," translate it as: this is plastic, shaped to move water on its surface, which is great for a hard workout and unremarkable the rest of the time. Useful, narrow, and not magic.

Why 50/50 blends are the worst of both

You'd think a cotton-polyester blend would split the difference — some breathability, some wrinkle resistance. In practice a 50/50 poly-cotton tends to inherit the weaknesses of both more than the strengths. It can feel less breathable than pure cotton and pill more, while still wrinkling more than pure polyester. That's a matter of taste. The part that isn't a matter of taste is recycling.

Pure cotton can, in principle, be recycled or composted. Pure polyester can, in principle, be mechanically recycled. A 50/50 blend can do essentially neither, because there's no economical way to separate two fibers that are spun together into a single yarn. Blending welds a natural fiber and a plastic into a material that, at end of life, is neither recyclable nor compostable — it's just landfill. So the blend that looks like a sensible compromise on the rack is the version that's hardest to do anything responsible with later.

This is also exactly the kind of thing our tiering exists to surface. A "cotton-rich" tee that's 60% cotton, 40% polyester isn't cotton in any sense that matters to this site — it's a blend, and it lands in the Excluded tier rather than getting a pass for the cotton on the front of the label. We'd rather leave a garment out than mislabel it.

Where cotton genuinely wins, and where it doesn't

Be fair to cotton by being honest about it. Where it wins: next-to-skin comfort, breathability in everyday heat, the absence of odor retention, biodegradability, and the way a good cotton garment gets better with age. For tees, shirts, underwear, bedding, and most of what you wear sitting still in normal weather, cotton is the more pleasant material to live in. If that's your use case, the cotton listings are the obvious place to start.

Where cotton doesn't win: it absorbs water and stays wet, which makes it a poor choice for serious endurance sport or genuinely cold, wet conditions — wet cotton against skin pulls heat away fast, the reason hikers warn against it. It wrinkles. It can shrink. And it isn't especially abrasion-resistant for hard outdoor gear. For those specific jobs, a synthetic or a different natural fiber is the better tool, and we'd say so.

It's also worth a clarification we take seriously: cotton isn't the only honest answer. For warmth and odor resistance in active or cold use, wool beats both polyester and cotton at their own games — it insulates when damp and resists smell naturally. For hot weather and durability, linen and hemp breathe beautifully and last. The real comparison was never cotton against polyester alone; it's natural fibers, chosen for the job, against a default plastic chosen for the price.

A note on the gray zone

One honest caveat before you go shopping. Fibers like viscose, modal, lyocell (Tencel), and bamboo viscose get marketed as the "natural" alternative to polyester — soft, plant-based, breathable. They do start as plant cellulose. But they're dissolved and chemically re-spun, which makes them neither a petrochemical synthetic like polyester nor an unprocessed natural fiber like cotton. We treat them as a genuine gray zone: off by default, and there for you to switch on if you decide they belong in your definition.
