Is Lyocell (Tencel) Natural? The Honest Answer

Lyocell sits in the most awkward spot in any fiber chart: it starts as a tree and ends as a thread, with a vat of solvent in between. So is lyocell (Tencel) natural? The honest answer is "neither, exactly" — and that gray zone is worth understanding before you let a label decide for you.

Is lyocell (Tencel) natural? The short answer

Lyocell is made from wood. It is also made in a chemical plant. Both of those are true, which is exactly why it's hard to file. It isn't a fiber that grows on a plant and gets spun more or less as-is, the way cotton or linen does. And it isn't conjured out of petroleum, the way polyester or nylon is. It's something in between — a plant material that's been dissolved into a liquid and pushed back out as a fiber.

That in-between status is the whole story. "Tencel" is just a brand name for lyocell made by one producer; on a label the two words mean the same thing. When a brand stamps "natural" on a Tencel shirt, they're leaning on the wood-pulp half and quietly skipping the dissolved-and-re-spun half. We'd rather show you both halves.

What "regenerated cellulose" actually means

Cellulose is the structural stuff in plant cell walls — the fiber in wood, cotton, and most plants. Cotton is already in fiber form when it leaves the boll, so you can clean it, comb it, and spin it. Wood isn't. To get a thread out of a tree, you have to take the cellulose apart and put it back together.

That's what "regenerated" means here. Wood is broken down into pulp, the pulp is dissolved into a thick liquid, and that liquid is forced through tiny holes — think of a showerhead at a microscopic scale — into a bath that hardens the streams back into solid fiber. The raw input is a plant. The output is a manufactured filament. Lyocell, viscose, modal, bamboo "viscose," cupro, and acetate are all regenerated cellulose. They differ mostly in how the dissolving is done.

Lyocell vs viscose vs modal vs bamboo

These four names get used loosely, sometimes interchangeably, and they shouldn't be. The chemistry behind each one is different, and the differences are real even if we describe them in plain terms rather than formulas.

Viscose (also sold as "rayon") is the oldest and crudest of the group. It's made with a harsher, multi-step chemical process, and historically a lot of the chemicals and water involved have not been recovered — they leave the factory as waste. When a label just says "viscose" or "rayon," that's usually what you're looking at.

Modal is a refined cousin of viscose, typically made from beech, engineered to be stronger and to hold up better when wet. Same broad family, tuned for performance.

Lyocell is the newer method, and the meaningful difference is the solvent and what happens to it. Lyocell is made in a closed-loop process: the chemical used to dissolve the pulp is captured and reused again and again, rather than dumped, and the solvent itself is less aggressive than the viscose chemistry. That closed loop is the main reason lyocell gets talked about as the "better" regenerated fiber. It's a defensible claim about the process — not a claim that the result is a natural fiber.

Bamboo is where labels get slippery. Bamboo grows fast and sounds wholesome, but almost all "bamboo" fabric is bamboo that's been pulped and run through the viscose process — chemically, it's viscose that happens to start with bamboo. "Bamboo viscose" is the honest name for it. Unless a product specifically says bamboo lyocell, assume the bamboo on the label is the viscose route, not the closed-loop one.

Why it's neither cotton nor polyester

It helps to see what lyocell is not, on both sides.

It's not cotton, because cotton is a fiber you harvest. Lyocell is a fiber you manufacture from a different plant entirely. The "it comes from plants" line is true of both, but it does a lot of quiet work — a wooden chair also comes from plants, and nobody calls it a natural fiber.

It's not polyester, either, and this matters just as much. Polyester is a plastic spun from petroleum. Lyocell's backbone is cellulose from a tree, not a fossil-fuel polymer. Calling lyocell "basically synthetic" overstates it in the other direction. It is genuinely a middle category, which is why we treat it as its own group rather than forcing it into one of the two it almost-but-doesn't-quite belong to.

Honest pros and cons

None of this makes lyocell bad. It makes it specific. The useful question isn't "good or evil" — it's "what are you actually getting." Here's the practical version.

We always flag that a garment contains a cellulosic; the toggle only changes whether that fiber counts toward "acceptable," not whether you can see it. If the gray zone bothers you, the simplest move is to skip it entirely. Leave the toggle off and shop the fibers that don't need an asterisk — cotton, linen, hemp, wool, and silk. If you like how lyocell wears and you've made your peace with how it's made, turn it on and it'll show up alongside the rest. Either way, you're deciding with the full picture instead of a marketing word. That's the whole point — we'd rather leave a garment out than mislabel it.
