How to Read a Clothing Label (and the Tricks Brands Use)

The product title says "100% cotton." The little tag sewn into the side seam tells a different story — and that tag, not the title, is the one the law cares about. Learning to read it takes about a minute per garment, once you know where brands bend the truth.

There are two labels, and only one is honest

Every garment comes with two descriptions. The first is the marketing headline — the product title, the hangtag, the words on the website. The second is the composition label, the small tag stitched into a seam, where the brand is legally required to list what the garment is actually made of, fiber by fiber, as a percentage.

Learning how to read a clothing label means learning to ignore the first and trust the second. The headline can say almost anything. The composition line has rules. When the two disagree — and they disagree constantly — the seam tag wins.

So the whole skill comes down to finding that composition line and reading it literally. Here is what it's hiding.

What the composition line legally has to tell you

A composition label lists fibers by name and percentage, and the percentages have to add up to 100. "60% cotton, 35% polyester, 5% elastane" is a complete, legal composition line. It is also a garment that is more than a third plastic, sold under a title that probably mentions only the cotton.

Two things the line does not have to do, and this is where the gaps open up:

Read the line as a literal recipe. If it names a synthetic — polyester, nylon, acrylic, elastane (also sold as spandex or Lycra), polypropylene — that fiber is in the garment at the stated percentage, no matter how the front of the tag is worded.

"Body," "shell," and "lining" — where the plastic hides

This is the single most useful thing to understand about labels. A composition tag often isn't one recipe — it's several, one per component. You'll see headings like Body, Shell, Lining, Trim, Rib, or Fill, each with its own percentages.

A jacket can read "Shell: 100% wool" in big confidence and then, two lines down, "Lining: 100% polyester." Both are true. The part you see is wool; the part against your skin is plastic. A cotton T-shirt can be 100% cotton in the body and have a collar ribbing that's 95% cotton, 5% elastane — because the ribbing needs to stretch back into shape and cotton alone won't.

The fix is mechanical: read every component, not just the first one. The headline almost always quotes the best component. The label tells you about all of them. Headline tricks: "cotton-rich," "cotton-blend," and friends

Once you're reading the seam tag, the front-of-garment language stops being information and starts being a tell. A few phrases that should make you flip straight to the composition line:

"Cotton-rich." This means there's more cotton than anything else — and nothing more. "Cotton-rich" is regularly used for fabric that's a little over half cotton and the rest polyester. It's a real share of cotton, dressed up to sound like a near-total one.

"Cotton blend," "wool blend," "linen blend." A blend is, by definition, the natural fiber mixed with something else. The word "blend" is doing the work of not telling you what the something else is. Check the line; it's usually polyester or acrylic.

"Made with" or "contains." "Made with organic cotton" can be technically true at any percentage above zero. It describes an ingredient, not a recipe.

None of these are lies. That's the point — they're all defensible, which is why they're everywhere. The composition percentages are the only part of the package that can't be softened with an adjective.

Process words posing as materials

Here's a trap that catches careful readers too: some words sound like fibers but describe how a fabric is built or finished, not what it's made of.

"Fleece" is not a fiber. It's a fabric construction — a soft, napped knit. Most fleece sold today is polyester. A few are cotton or wool. The word tells you the texture, not the material, so "fleece" alone tells you nothing about whether the garment is natural. Read the line.

The same goes for flannel (a brushed weave — can be cotton or polyester), jersey (a knit structure — cotton, wool, or synthetic), twill, terry, and sherpa. All of them name a construction or a finish. None of them name a fiber. When a product leads with the texture word and never gets specific about composition, that's usually because the composition isn't the selling point.

And the cleverest one of all:

"Vegan leather," "down alternative," and other rebrands

"Vegan leather" is plastic. Almost always polyurethane (sometimes PVC) — a synthetic coating on a synthetic or fabric backing. It's a genuinely effective rebrand: it takes a petroleum product and gives it an ethical-sounding name. If you're avoiding synthetics, "vegan leather" is a synonym for the thing you're avoiding. Real leather, for what it's worth, is an animal material, not a plastic — a different question entirely, and a different shelf.

"Down alternative" and "synthetic down" mean polyester fill. "Faux fur" and "sherpa" mean acrylic or polyester. "Technical," "performance," and "moisture-wicking" almost always mean a synthetic was engineered in on purpose, because that behavior is what the plastic does. The naming is doing a job; once you know the job, the words are useful warnings.

Care symbols as composition hints

When a composition tag is missing, vague, or in a language you can't read, the care label can corroborate. It's not proof, but it rhymes with the fiber.

"Do not tumble dry," "reshape while damp," "dry flat," and "do not iron" lean natural — wool, linen, and silk are fussy about heat and need shaping. "Wash cold, hang dry, do not iron" on a stretchy knit often points to elastane, which heat ruins. Garments that are happy at high heat and shrug off wrinkles are frequently synthetic, because plastic is dimensionally stable in ways cotton and linen aren't. Treat care symbols as a tiebreaker, never as the verdict — the composition line is still the document of record.

A deterministic rules engine maps each fiber to one of three groups: natural (the plant and animal fibers — cotton, linen, wool, silk, hemp, and their relatives), synthetic (polyester, elastane, nylon, acrylic, and the rest of the petroleum family), and a third, honest middle group.

That middle group is the cellulosics — viscose, modal, lyocell (sold as Tencel), bamboo, cupro, acetate. They start as plant cellulose but get dissolved and re-spun in a chemical process, so they aren't petrochemical synthetics and they aren't unprocessed naturals either. We won't pretend that's a settled question. They're a genuine gray zone, off by default and toggleable, so you decide whether they count. Either way we flag when a garment contains one.

From all that we assign a single honest tier, and when a composition is too ambiguous to read confidently, the garment is excluded rather than guessed at.
